Reality (?) TV: Donnie Loves Jenny

Since my roads are covered and my car is horrible in the snow, I decided to check out the DVR and catch up on a show that I’ve been watching; Donnie Loves Jenny.

This quirky show is a spinoff of A&E’s Wahlbergers, runs 30 minutes, and follows the newlywed life of TV Host/Personality Jenny McCarthy and New Kid, now Blueboods’ Star Donnie Wahlberg.

If you’re into true reality then I would say that this probably isn’t for you. Yes, there’s a reality part to this show, but there’s definitely some things that seems slightly staged. Each episode doesn’t seem to follow a schedule but rather a theme.

This week’s episode was focused on the idea of the couple having a new baby. Donnie has two older boys from a previous relationship and Jenny has a younger son. The couple is unsure whether or not they should have a baby together because they both are madly in love and want to create “a product of their love.”

You see the crazy comic relief during these episodes with the other characters and the quick wit. Jenny’s father acts as one of these reliefs and in prior episodes they make him do funny things (get facials that resulted in a very red face, etc.). The other dominant “funny” character would also be the interaction of Jenny with her Sister JoJo. In previous episodes you see the two sisters in a public setting and Jenny asks JoJo to do something inappropriate/embarassing (buy embarrassing medications at the pharmacy). This week’s episode featured Jenny singing a funny childhood song and JoJo retaliating by diving deeper into Jenny’s fear of plastic dolls.

The episode ends where they decide to actually not have children because they love their life the way that it is and they don’t want it to change anything about it or have the stress of the baby – for right now. I would agree that they have a lot going on and they really seem to be enjoying their growing relationship.

So my overall thought for the show is that it’s light and airy. There isn’t major drama or a consistent storyline but rather the characters are faced with some theme about life each week; kind of like a regular sitcom – at the start of each episode the cast seems to revert back to the same place they were; no development. It’s totally fine because I watch quite a bit of shows but this would probably not be on my top 10. Remember that if you’re going for 100% reality – this definitely isn’t it.

I really love their transitionary images though. It’s the couples’ Instagram feed. They really do seem like a loving family and very in-love couple (I read somewhere that they haven’t been apart from each other for more than 7 hours or something?). My favorite part of their show is when they say how much they love each other. They say random (sometimes weird, morbid, inappropriate) reasons why they love each other and it’s so funny but yet something that seems more real because of the fact that it reminds us all that love isn’t all romance but it’s real life and sometimes odd – in fact, you could love someone so much that you “sew flagpole rings on my arm and have someone hoist me up to the top of a flag pole and have a big heart that’s written on it that says Mommy Loves Donnie and Evan and I’d flap in the wind forever and ever.” Ha.

Do you like this show? Let me know! I’m eager to hear your opinion!
