This past weekend I had to drive into D.C. to pickup my parents from the airport. They were returning from a relaxing week of Orioles’ Spring Training, coral sand beaches, and beau coup daiquiris.
Since this weekend was Shamrock Fest in D.C. a friend of mine suggested that I get to D.C. early should there be traffic. Well, anyone that knows me knows that a previous hobby of mine was baking. I had my own business called WeekendCupcake that really allowed me to pour my creativity into baked creations for different events. I stopped this business because it became too time consuming and slightly stressful; but you’ll catch me here and there whipping up a couple dozen batches – it all just depends.
BUT, the reason I mentioned the cupcake business and D.C. is because whenever I pop into the city for a reason, if I can, I try and swing by the place that started it all; Georgetown Cupcake. Several years ago a show on D.C. called D.C. cupcakes aired and it sparked my creativity. The reason being is that this show didn’t make PERFECT cupcakes, it made cupcakes that emulated the baker themselves. This show was a prime example of how perfection is in the eye of the beholder and if people don’t appreciate that, then they don’t, but as long as your happy with it, that’s all that matters. Again, this was a huge eye opener for me and this cupcakery will also have a special place in my heart. I told my friend, if you EVER have to buy me a cake for an event; I like ice cream cakes, costco custard cakes and Georgetown Cupcakes.
So since I was in the city, I scooped up my friend and headed over to the very quaint and very BUSY Georgetown.
When we got out of the car, I couldn’t help but fall in love with my surroundings; a ton of stores and a lot of great architecture. Plus the weather was fantastic!
When we arrived on the corner where Georgetown Cupcake resides, the usual line was there. Because of such fantastic weather, my friend and I didn’t mind waiting and basking in the sunshine and warmth; what a change from the winter we experienced this year!
By the time we made it inside (about 20 minutes later) we were enthralled by their flavor choices and the sugary sweet aroma that filled the air. I couldn’t help but reminisce from the show. The place was still just as busy as I remembered but I didn’t recognize anyone from the cast; however, the signature was still there and I couldn’t wait to get my cupcakes.
Now in my “past” life, I would’ve ordered a dozen but I’m trying to walk a healthier journey in life so I only got my favorites in one of their signature 4 packs; Vanilla Squared, Vanilla and Chocolate, Salted Caramel and Red Velvet.
Vanilla Squared is your basic vanilla cake with vanilla frosting. Their cake is not super sweet (which I love), very buttery (which I love) and very classic (which I love); it’s topped with their buttercream which has notes of cream cheese in it. It’s delicious and such a core flavor for the cupcake world.
Vanilla and Chocolate is your basic vanilla cake with a chocolate frosting. This wasn’t a chocolate buttercream but more like a dark chocolate ganache that had been whipped a little bit. It’s pretty good but I think this one will fall off of my list.
Their salted caramel is such a fun flavor! It’s a brown sugar cupcake, with caramel buttercream frosting and a caramel flower/star on top for decor. This cupcake is SWEET, but if you love caramel, you’ll love this.
Their red velvet is why I drive down there and pay $3.50 per cupcake. It’s SO GOOD – an apple cider vinegar red velvet cake topped with a basic cream cheese frosting. It’s so good and is really the only red velvet cake I like (besides cheesecake factory cheese cake and my red velvet cupcakes). So delicious with the light chocolate flavors and rich cream cheese flavor.
Now, as I mentioned, I am living a healthier lifestyle, so I only took a bite of each flavor! Gotta stay healthy and still enjoy life! It’s ok for a cheat day here and there but I have the mindset that not EVERYDAY is a cheat day.
My friend indulged in two of their March flavor special: mint cookie crunch. Looked delicious and can’t wait to hear from her how they were!
This was such a great mini-adventure this weekend with my friend and in such a cool place. It’s times like these that merge my past, present and future, and remind me that the best is yet to come in life because it’ll be a combination of things from my past that I love mixed with the excitement of a brighter life ahead.
