Friday Crab Nights

I wanted to share something that is a favorite thing of mine; Friday crab nights with my family and friends. We used to have crabs on random nights of the week, but here lately because of Lent, we’ve made Friday our pescatarian dining affair where we indulge in the staple of Maryland cuisine and unwind after a long week.

Every Friday morning, I get a text from our group asking how many crabs I want because the order goes in early. During this time of the year crabs are sparse and they go very quickly, so someone always calls that morning to reserve that night’s needed amount.

We normally each order a half dozen.

By the time 8 pm comes on Friday evening, everyone’s ready to go, the butter is melted, the wine is poured and the conversation starts.

We all love it. Again, it’s that time to unwind after a long week; Friday evenings are my favorite part of the week because the weekend has just started and we still have two more full days left. Everyone’s in a great mood and you really get a sense of excitement for the next two days off.

The funny thing is that crabs are delicious but they never fill us up. We don’t eat them because we’re hungry, we eat them because it’s a way for us all to congregate and discuss what’s happened during the week. We spend a lot of time laughing, some times there are debates and sometimes there are arguments, but they always end with even more laughing and moving onto the next topic. I love this group of friends because I feel like we’re all in the same place in our lives – hard working, dedicated and motivated. We can all relate and that is the real reason why we all have such a blast.

I’m telling you this in a very generic sense because I think you could picture your group of friends and family doing the same thing. We talk about how excited we are throughout the week for this and again, it really has nothing to do with the crabs, but mostly the friendship and the relaxation. It’s a mini vacation at the end of each week and I can’t wait for next Friday. This is the perfect way to start a weekend and anyone and everyone should do something like this because it’s therapeutic.

Let’s get to Friday people, to where our weekend starts and the stress of the week is just a forgotten memory laughed about over the smells of Old Bay, wine and melted butter.
